MRI of the Knee, in plain English.
A knee MRI shows the bones, cartilage, ligaments (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL), menisci and tendons of the knee. It is the standard test for a knee injury that is not settling in 2-3 weeks.

Why doctors order this scan
- Knee injury during sport or a fall — knee giving way
- Locking, catching or clicking in the knee
- Persistent knee pain and swelling not settling with rest
- Before knee surgery or arthroscopy
What this MRI actually shows
- •The thigh bone (femur), shin bone (tibia) and knee cap (patella)
- •The two menisci (medial and lateral) — the C-shaped cushions
- •The four main ligaments (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL)
- •The cartilage lining the joint
Common findings, decoded
These are the words you are most likely to see. They sound scarier than they usually are.
- Meniscal tear
- A tear in the C-shaped cushion cartilage.
- ACL tear
- A tear in the front cross-ligament of the knee. Common in sports and RTAs.
- Joint effusion
- Extra fluid in the joint. Small amounts are often normal after activity.
- Chondromalacia patellae
- Softening of the cartilage under the knee cap.
- Baker's cyst
- A fluid pouch at the back of the knee. Usually harmless.
Words that usually deserve a doctor conversation
If you see any of these on your report, it does not mean an emergency — but do not ignore them either. Book a follow-up.
How to prepare for the scan
- •No fasting needed
- •Wear shorts or loose lower clothing
- •Remove any metal from pockets
- •Scan takes about 20-30 minutes. Only your leg is inside the scanner.
Questions worth asking your doctor
- 1Is this tear likely to heal on its own, or will I need surgery?
- 2What kind of physiotherapy should I start?
- 3When can I go back to running / gym / cricket?
- 4Do I need a knee brace?
In an Indian context
Knee MRIs are ordered heavily in India for both sports injuries (cricket, football, gym) and early osteoarthritis in adults over 45. "Grade 1" and "Grade 2" meniscal signals often do not need surgery.
Frequently asked questions
Do all meniscal tears need surgery?+
No. Small tears, degenerative tears in older patients, and stable tears often do well with physiotherapy, activity modification, and time. Larger displaced tears, locking symptoms, or tears in young sportspersons are more likely to need arthroscopy.
How much does a knee MRI cost in India?+
A knee MRI in India is generally priced between ₹3,500 and ₹8,000 depending on the city and the scanner strength (1.5T vs 3T).
